Twenty environmentally impassioned students are needed to help start up a sustainable living pilot project in the Western Student Housing Residences at Malaspina University-College this fall.
Nanoose House - one of seven new residence buildings recently built at the Nanaimo campus - is set to be transformed into an ecologically-friendly home for September 2006.
Joanne Bakker, a Malaspina alumni and support staff member, thought up the idea and felt an environmentally-friendly home is a step in the right direction for Nanaimo and the Malaspina community.
"It’s really important to encourage students to think and act in favour of the environment on campus and give them the opportunity to initiate change in their surroundings," said Bakker.
"This will be a pilot project and the new residents will be helping leave a legacy for other students."
A resident advisor has recently been hired to help coordinate the sustainable activities students decide upon. Some of those activities may include educational campus programs, composting in residence, local produce deliveries and community gardening.
Deadline for application is April 14.
