A bright, colourful new logo for the Nanaimo Arts Council (NAC) has been designed by a student in Vancouver Island University’s (VIU) Graphic Design program.
Bee Macadam, now a second year student working toward her Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Graphic Design, worked on the logo in her Design Process class in the spring term of 2015.
“It was a really great experience for us because we’re practicing working with clients and we do a lot of role playing,” said Macadam, who went on to work with NAC as a summer student.
Graphic Design professor Nancy Pagé integrated the NAC logo design as part of the design process curriculum, which offered students a ‘real world’ experience of working for a client, learning about their organization through research, and then designing a logo from concept to completion, with the added experience of working with a client’s feedback and requirements.
The new logo, which supports the NAC’s vision to be a “catalyst for creative community,” is a welcome update for the organization which has served Nanaimo’s arts sector since 1965.
NAC executive director Sarah Schmidt said Macadam’s logo was chosen by herself and NAC president Melanie Godel, who were impressed with the calibre of design from the entire class.
Macadam, who received an honourarium for her logo design, also designed the new NAC website, which was launched in October.
