Up and coming Canadian bakers are being sought out for a new baking competition.

The Baking Association of Canada, BC Chapter, Island Committee is hosting a special Apprentice and Trainee Baking Competition as part of the new chapter’s second Annual General Meeting at Malaspina University-College, Nanaimo campus, September 18.

Rita Gower, a Malaspina baking instructor and secretary for the Island Committee, hopes the competition will inspire new bakers and pastry chefs and encourage them to continue growing their craft.

"Competition is part of the industry," said Gower.

"We are seeing a greater demand for artisan baking and traditional formulas as well as new levels of artistry. Baking is now more and more about quality and showmanship and not just about churning out butter tarts. We are also seeing a return to using quality ingredients like real butter and cream, so it is fitting that we have the Dairy Commission and the Milk Marketing Board as sponsors for this event."

Competitors are encouraged to enter one or all of the three categories which include breads, danish or croissants and French pastries. Awards will be given for first, second and third place in each category.

The competition is open to all baking or pastry apprentices, trainees or students, including those who have completed their training on or after September 2005.

Registration deadline is September 6. For more contest details and an application form email Gower at ritagower@shaw.ca.
