Do you want to improve your health and fitness?

Malaspina University-College’s Recreational Sports and Lifestyle Activities department invites residents of central Vancouver Island to participate in the Discovery of Wellness on Saturday, January 29 at the Nanaimo campus.

The day-long event includes free seminars and classes, and an evening talk by four-time Olympian Silken Laumann. One of Canada’s most inspirational leaders, Laumann will speak about the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of our lives.

“The purpose of this event is to educate, inspire and encourage participants to lead a more balanced lifestyle and reduce the risk of long term disease,” said Noreen Ortilla, Malaspina’s Recreational Sports and Lifestyle Activities Technician.

The seminars – taught by local naturopaths, coaches, university-college professors, personal trainers, dieticians and rehabilitation specialists – will cover topics including the healing power of foods, stress release techniques, time management and relaxation. Participants can try free classes in yoga, pilates, belly dancing, tai chi and more.

Local businesses will demonstrate the importance of living a balanced lifestyle through displays and exhibits. Exhibitors include educational and training institutions, health and fitness equipment and clothing suppliers, active groups, rehabilitative specialists and sports and leisure organizations.

“There will be prizes, free food and childminding on site throughout the day,” added Ortilla. Admission is free. All activities take place in the Malaspina Gymnasium, Building 190, 900 Fifth Street, Nanaimo.

Tickets for Silken Laumann’s keynote address are $5 for elementary, high school and college students, and $10 for community members. Advance tickets can be purchased by calling 740-6418 or by visiting the Malaspina gymnasium.

Participants are also invited to take “their first step into wellness” by gathering in the Malaspina gym Sunday, Jan. 30, for the first annual five km run and 2.5 km Walk into Wellness from 10 am to noon.
